How Phil Shappard has hindered Moody Radio and is wasting listeners donations

The Conclusion 11/6/07

In October, during the annual Managers meeting where all the outside station mangers come to meet, Wayne invited all broadcasting staff to a 3 hour Q&A with the C.E.O. of Moody, Ed Cannon.

It was at this meeting we were encouraged to bring all problems forward to discuss, with out the fear of being fired (jokingly by Wayne.) Many of the other departments were having similar problems... that management does not listen to its employees. Several people spoke about the particular issues I was facing in my “new” department. Instead of embarrassing Phil, Doug, and Wayne I decided to talk to the CEO Ed Cannon on his way back to his office after the meeting. He was going to be a part of a new initiative to have more people involved in major decisions being made at the Institute instead of decisions being made by only a few. I thought he should be aware of the money being spent unwisely.

He seemed very receptive and asked me for a follow up email about what we had discussed. He then sent it to Wayne and said “why is this still a problem?” Was he talking about me or RCS... I’ll never really know.

From that email, Wayne and Doug fired me on November 6, 2007

I was rather upset and let Wayne Pederson know. He said that my questions were answered in my dismissal letter so I wrote him again responding directly from the dismissal letter.

This was the letter I originally wrote him. I admit I was frustrated, but some things needed to be said to him and I feel by sharing them with you it will help him move to an area of ministry more suited to the strengths that God has given him.

The real issue here is that Phil Shappard still continues to waste valuable resources of the Moody Bible Institute. He has publicly stated that we should not strive for perfection, but just enough to get by. (For example, the quality of audio you receive from
www.moodyaudio.com is far less than what you would get from iTunes and costs almost 3 times as much.) We can only surmise he is afraid that there won’t be a place for him at Moody if everything works and is of the highest quality, nothing more to achieve. We thought he might be getting kick backs from RCS, but after thinking about it, he isn’t that smart. I spoke up, but he has the few white males in management under his spell.... and 30+ years of “service”. So now Phil Shappard is the proud Manager of the Department of Audio with employees totaling one.

As of April 2008, almost a dozen people have left the employment of Moody Broadcasting. Some because of what has happened to me, but most because of the over all lack of leadership and micro-management. I predict within 10 years, Moody Broadcasting will consist only of a production department and maybe WMBI. Moody Bible Institute as a school will no longer be free, but will require tuition as per the direction Michael Easley is heading.

All of the outside Owned and Operated stations around the country have shared with me their stories of how Phil Shappard has made their lives difficult. They are afraid to share their struggles with management and I can not share their stories as they have told them to me in confidence.

The truth about Phil Shappard is out there and Ed Cannon, Wayne Pederson, and Doug Hastings refuse to hear it.

Update- June 2008- Michael Easley has resigned! Hallelujah!
(Although he is serving as
president emeritus through 2009)

Update- October 2008 Wayne Pederson is leaving in November to work for HCJB.

Phil’s days are finally numbered! Whomever is chosen to replace the President and Vice President of Broadcasting will hopefully ask around about what Phil actually does there and discover he is detrimental to the mission of Moody Broadcasting.
